ARTIST'S STATEMENT

We live in a magical world of great beauty, from the tiny perfection of an insect to the majestic movement of clouds. In the busyness of our daily lives we often overlook this incredible gift or notice it fleetingly. As a landscape artist I get to spend my time looking. The impact certain places have had on me is one I want to share with those who view my work.

In 1997, I found myself profoundly moved by the vast scale, open skies and rawness of the Icelandic landscape. This experience shifted my focus to landscape and the use of a new medium, soft pastel. In 2001, I made my first trip to New Mexico to see if I would find a similar environmental impact. I found the NM landscape a similar grand, open scale with the plus of an arid environment with intense clarity of light making it a great place to work on site. With every trip I feel I go farther and deeper into the place and culture—NM, AZ, UT, CO, MT and now back to Iceland.

Some of the work is done start to finish on site, some are started on site and changed or finished in the studio and the largest pieces done completely in the studio. I hope there is something here that will reward your looking and encourage your looking wherever you may be.
